Truth and Bright Water is the story of Tecumseh and Lum, two cousins living in Truth, a small American town just across the border and the river from the Bright Water Reserve.
"Family's only good reason to stay in Truth and Bright Water," says one resident, and it is the intertwined mysteries of family life that beckon some of its more nomadic residents to return. They bring with them new stories and secrets, at the same time unearthing old ones.
There is Monroe Swimmer, famous Indian artist, who takes up residence in the old church with an unusual double-barrelled plan to make the building invisible and repopulate the prairie with its rightful beings. Tec's summer job with Monroe becomes a series of life lessons for the boy, as he tries to figure out his own family mysteries. Why has his Aunt Cassie returned from her travels, to give Tec's mother a suitcase full of baby clothes? And will his mother and father get back together?
Lum's only goal is to win the foot race in the local Indian Days festival, but unlike the other Truth seekers, Lum is running away - away from a difficult past and an abusive father.
Meanwhile, the tourists arrive to partake in a strange and bloody spectacle involving guns, buffaloes and motorcycles - and the lives of the people in Truth and Bright Water intersect in love, tragedy and reconciliation.
