Written in nervy, lyrical, beat-driven prose, Ray Robertson has composed a linguistically rich and intellectually challenging first novel that evokes early Thomas McGuane for its strikingly fresh use of language and richly comedic treatment of thematic concerns.

James Thompson is a twenty-four-year-old country-and-western musician with a small, independent Toronto record label and a big-time case of writer's block. He returns to small-town Canada, Datum, Ontario, to try out the usual sources of inspired song. There follows the beginning of deep Datum devils, and then there is Melissa, a beautiful and utterly self-assured nineteen-year-old aspiring poet who includes Patsy Cline and Beaudelaire as among her most important literary influences. Energy builds.
